I've been a locksmith for 25 years. My shop is a two-bay garage behind my house with a dented roll-up door from a job gone sideways in 2009. I test every safe the same way: a pry test with my 24-inch crowbar, a drop from four feet onto the concrete pad where my dog Barney sleeps, and a lock manipulation session with my pick set and tension wrench.

Pry Test Results
I drove the tip of my crowbar into the door gap on the Amazon Basics safe and leaned on it. The door flexed maybe an eighth of an inch before the steel held. The latch didn't budge. That's the difference between a security box and a toy.
The SentrySafe is heavier. At 39 pounds, it's got more mass behind the door, and the pry test felt more solid. The door gap is tighter. But the weight is a double-edged sword. One buyer, M.R., wrote on February 2: "It's heavy enough to feel secure and heavy enough to be a pain to move." He's right on both counts.
The Yuanshikj safe failed the pry test in about thirty seconds. The door gap widened, the latch slipped, and the door popped open. That's not a safe. That's a lockbox for a library card.
Fire Ratings: What the Fine Print Says
The fire ratings on these boxes are measured in minutes at a specific temperature. The Amazon Basics safe is rated for 30 minutes at 1200°F. The SentrySafe is rated for 30 minutes at 1550°F. The 35Min Real Fireproof Safe Box is rated for 35 minutes at 1650°F.
But I've seen what a house fire does to steel. The fire survivor story, the one where the Amazon Basics safe came out of a total-loss fire and still opened, is remarkable. The keypad worked. Four handguns, ammo, and paperwork came out intact. That's luck as much as engineering.
Don't bet your birth certificate on a fire rating. Buy a fire-resistant bag for the irreplaceable stuff and put it inside the safe. That's the two-layer approach I recommend to every customer.
The Beeper Problem
The beeper is annoying. The beeper is annoying. Multiple buyers report disabling the speaker entirely. I've done the electrical tape thing myself on an Amazon Basics safe. One buyer, J.T., wrote on January 19: "I unscrewed the PCB and poked holes in the speaker. Best modification I've made." I understand why.

Battery Doors and Lockouts

Tape the battery door as insurance. And for the love of God, don't store the backup key inside the safe. That's how you end up calling me.
Anchoring: Sink Those Suckers In
A 39-pound safe is a carry-away waiting to happen. The SentrySafe is heavy enough that most thieves won't try to haul it. But the Amazon Basics at 16 pounds? A burglar will grab it and be gone.
I bolted the Amazon Basics to a stud with 3-inch lag bolts. That's overkill for a 16-pound box, but the bite is solid. If a thief wants it, they're taking the stud with them.
The anchor bolts that come with these safes don't fit through the holes by design. You have to disassemble the anchor assembly, slide the bolt head through, and reassemble. The instructions are lacking. Buyers either figure it out or get frustrated. That's a manufacturer failure.
Compared To
The SentrySafe is the better fire safe. The Amazon Basics is the better value. The choice depends on what you're protecting.
If you're storing documents that would ruin your life if they burned, the SentrySafe's 30 minutes at 1550°F gives you more margin. It's also got a better customer service track record. SentrySafe and Masterlock have replaced parts and answered phones when the gasket fell off. That's worth something.
The Amazon Basics safe is the better dorm room or office safe. It's cheap enough to replace, light enough to move, and tough enough to stop a crime of opportunity. Bolt it to a stud and it'll survive most break-ins.
Should You Buy It?
The Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe is the best pick for anyone who needs to stop sticky fingers and prying eyes without spending a fortune. It's ~$60, it survived my pry test, and it's got a real fire rating. That's cheap insurance for a passport and a spare key.
The SentrySafe Fireproof/Waterproof Digital Safe is the better pick if you're storing irreplaceable documents. The fire rating is better, the steel is heavier, and the company stands behind their product. The backup key bending is annoying, but you won't use it if you don't lose the combination.
The Yuanshikj Small Steel Security Safe is a security box, not a safe. It failed my pry test in thirty seconds. If you buy it, bolt it down and don't put anything in it you can't afford to lose.
What I'm Testing Next
I've got my eye on the [16.54" Tall] Safe Box with Fireproof Bag for a longer-term test. The fireproof bag is a genuinely useful addition, but the lock needs work. I want to see if it holds up after six months of daily use. I'll update this piece when I've got the data.
